Message We really do not approach tuning that way, especially not for 91 pump fuel.
We start with low boost and lower the timing in the maps, we check the air fuel ratio to make sure it is safe before doing a full boost pull.
Once the Air fuel is stable, we slowly raise the boost and correct the air fuel as needed as we go up.
The last thing we do is add timing up to what is safe.
We use to listen for detonation with the just our ears, we recently added a knock detection device that has a LED read out, as well as headphones.
I was surprised how easy these motors get light detonation at peak torque, we are having to lower the timing at peak torque more than we use to think was needed to have a completely clean pull.
Every program I have ever seen has more timing at peak torque than even are older EPROM tunes.
On pump fuel, we are more about making them safe.
The same Knock system can also be installed on the cars, with the system you can run a more aggressive tune because the system can be adjusted to pull timing as soon as it picks up knock, the amount of timing the system pulls can also be adjusted.
You can read more about the knock system and see some video of testing the unit on Seb's car here.....
